How to get your website on page #1 on Google

Watch the video (6 minutes) or read the article below the video (6 to 7 minute reading time).

Earlier I published an article about how I got a website, back in 2015, on page #1 on Google with organic results.
A website in the hospitality branche, which is very competitive.
This particular website has been on page #1 for more than 3 years.

How can you get your website to rank on page #1 on Google?

Basically there are 2 methods to rank on page 1

Method #1 is paying for advertising.

It´s easy to sign up for a Google Adwords account however if you lack knowledge on how to setup the right ads, you can lose a lot of money.
If you consider this option it is smart to ask a pro to help you with this.

Method #2 is optimizing your website.

10 steps to optimize your website and get results organically.

Step 1
Add your URL to Google and other search engines.

Some people think when they publish their website, Google will automatically index their website, just because it is published.
That might have been true in the past but now with hundreds of millions of websites you need to add your URL to Google.
It´s not a bad idea to add the URL to other search engines as well, like Bing.

Step 2
Add a SSL certificate to your website.

Google prefers secure websites. And ranks secure websites higher than non secure websites.
Check with your hosting provider how to add a SSL certificate.

Step 3
Optimize the images.

Check the names of your images, many images have generic file names like IMG00001.jpg
Can you tell what this image contains?

Renaming your image to match with the content for example rename “IMG00001.jpg” to “SEO Optimisation for small business websites”
Now does this explain better what this image is about?

Visitors will recognize what an image is about but google needs a clear description.
So it´s better if you rename your image before you upload it to your website.
Adding “alt” tags to your images also increases the chance of ranking on page #1.

Step 4
Content

The length and quality of your content should be useful information for the reader and unique. Copying content one on one from another website has a negative influence on your ranking as it´s considered plagiarism.

Step 5
Mobile Friendly

Make sure your website is mobile friendly.
With so many people now using mobile devices a mobile friendly website gets ranked higher than a non mobile friendly website.

Step 6
Inbound links

Having inbound links from other websites helps you rank better. The more websites that link to your website, the better.
However having lots of inbound links from linkfarms is a bad idea.

Step 7
Speed of page loading

The faster your pages load, the better for your ranking.
Wordpress for example offers many plugins that help you speed up your website. You can also consider using a CDN (Content Delivery Network).

Step 8
Age of domain names

An “old” domain name with quality content helps you get a better ranking. You can still rank well with a “fresh” domain name by publishing quality content and following these steps.

Step 8
Clear URL´s

Take a look at this link https://biznizstartupkit/index.php&id=12
Can you make sense of what this page is about?

Now consider this link https://biznizstartupkit.com/the-importance-of-seo-for-your-website/
Doesn´t this look a lot better and tell you what the page is about?

With a WordPress website you can easily setup how your URL´s show.

Step 9
Make sure your website has a sitemap

A sitemap is like an index for google which pages to index.
Having a sitemap makes it easy for search engines to index your website.
When you have a WordPress website, install a plugin like Yoast SEO. This plugin creates the XML sitemap for the search engines.
Every time you update a page or publish a blog post the sitemap is updates and sent to the search engines for reindexing your website.

Step 10
Using long tail keywords

A main keyword is something like “SEO optimisation”
At the date of writing this article google gives more than 49 million results.

A long tail keyword like “SEO optimisation for dentists” only gives 813.000 results
Another example of a long tail keyword is “SEO optimisation for dental clinics”, this long tail keyword only gives 338.000 results

You can see it is way easier to get your website on page 1 on Google with long tail keywords.

Doing research on your preferred audience will help you find the right long tail keywords. Long tail keywords make it easier to get your website on page 1

Now you know a bit better about how to have your website ranked in search engines like Google.

Next step is to apply for a free website audit.
